Entrepreneurship in the Local Community

Here at ELLEfluence, we are extremely passionate about entrepreneurship.

We work closely with the local community to inspire and motivate the next generation, to believe in their dreams.

Last week we attended Whitley Bay High School for their annual careers day. Having previously attended the High School to assist in their running of ‘Duck Day‘. This is an enterprise day which sees Year 9 Students create their own businesses. Duck Day, is an activity where they buy and sell t-shirts. They are also responsible for the running of their own operation, logistics and management. The ultimate aim is to see which team can generate the highest profits.

We were excited to have been invited back to host a session for those studying for their A-levels about careers in entrepreneurship.

This 45-minute session was a whistle stop tour of entrepreneurship and the world of a millennial. With 18 students in attendance, we first introduced ELLEfluence as a business. What we do, why we do it and how we work remotely. With the notion that work is an activity and not a place.

Inspiring the next Entrepreneur

This is a millennial ethos which we thoroughly champion and hoped to inspire the students in our session.

We got underway by splitting the students attending into five teams. They were all provided with a canned drink which had been completely blanked out. The task for the session was to come up with their own brand new canned drink.

In this in this Apprentice Style task, their ‘businesses’ were asked to create the branding for the new drink. They then had to work out their target market and come up with a price and the marketing to reflect their ideal customer. To draw this all together once they had created their logo and can design, and were then asked to create an Instagram campaign centred around their ideal audience. This was to show that each and every single one of the students were entrepreneurs in their own right. They were able to create something from nothing to take to market.

The culmination of taking an idea and creating digital advertising through a medium that the students related with such as Instagram, not only kept them engaged. It also opened up discussion of how they can apply technology to fields in which they’re passionate about. One of the students, studying all Science A Levels was extremely enthusiastic about taking his science knowledge and creating a business from this in the future. Another one of the students already had an affinity with online marketing as her Uncle, involved in Content Media for a well-known broadsheet had truly inspired her to follow in the same career path.

If you can inspire just one person, you have achieved so much already.

With attention on technology and the digital era, we think it is especially important to ensure that students whatever age are engaged with the world around them. In order to inspire, we must strive to be different. Through these kinds of sessions, we believe we do just that. Enabling the next generation to interact and understand through experiencing ‘in the now‘ activities and not those which have been in situ for decades which have lost relevance in today’s fast-paced digital society.

Diverse mix of ideas

We saw some fabulous creations from energy drinks to alcoholic beverages. High end to grab-n-go, the students really got into the spirit of the whole task. Through providing entrepreneurship sessions that are high octane, on trend and relevant we were able to capture their attention inspire the students in attendance.

Through using technology relevant to the students they were able to gain an insight into the world of ‘work’ no longer being a 9-5 office job, instead, an activity.
